History

Vernoncrest Golf Club began in July, 1947 as Vernondale Golf Club. Mrs. Mae Crowder, and the following nine ladies Mmes. Martha Clisby, Anise Clark, Lola Beavers, Georgette Evans, Roberta Jackson Center, Verna Hickman, Lois Hines, Maudelle Richardson, and Mary L. Woodyard had a vision, ideals and aspirations in promoting the game of golf for women of color in the Los Angeles Area. Vernondale became the first Black Women's Golf Club west of the Mississippi with a membership of over fifty vibrant and enthusiastic golfing ladies.

In 1953, Mrs. Crowder, President, hosted the organizing meeting of the Western States Golf Association, thereby becoming a charter member club of WSGA, which now boasts over 33 golf clubs throughout the Western United States. Vernondale was formally changed to Vernoncrest in 1955, and it was also in that year Mrs. Mary L. Woodyard was chosen as President, remaining as such until her untimely death on November 16, 1970. She was then succeeded by her Vice President, Lillian J. Fentress.

Being dedicated to all that the grand sport of golf has to offer, adhering to rules, competition, sportsmanship and wholesome fun in general, the ladies of Vernoncrest have continuously and successfully promoted outstanding invitational tournaments for the enjoyment of their many golfing friends (including this 61st anniversary of the Sweethearts tournament). Today, Vernoncrest continues to build on the legacy established over 70 years ago. Our club continues to promote golf for women of all playing levels.
